Just Looking
Sunday, September 20th, 2009
1pm at Union Sq.
Tour, DIY fashion shoot, and fun intervention party.
Just Looking is a tour and a fashion party intervention at the same time. A significant group of people, anywhere from 20 to 50, will meet at Union Square, and travel as a loosely assembled crowd, to different high-end fashion stores such as Diesel, G-Star Raw, and Kenneth Cole. Upon arriving at each location, participants are welcome (encouraged) to use the store's inventory as their personal wardrobe with which to create looks and styles as you wish. You may notice the store begin to get crowded and lots of other people Just Looking and having a fun time. They are participants as well.
Participants are welcome (encouraged) to photograph this event. Think of the fun you could have!
How will people know where to meet? Most participants have signed-up in advanced, via the web-link to the left of your this page. This is very simple. Simply arrive at about 10 minutes to 1pm, at the south side of Union square and remain at your leisure until 1pm--at which point, all signed-up participants will receive a text-message with the first stop of the tour, and directions. All locations are within convenient walking distance. At 1pm sharp, a symphony of ringtones will begin to simultaneously ring. In addition, participants will be encouraged to download their choice of free downloadable ring-tones to be installed onto their phones for the day of the tour/intervention. These ring-tones are custom made ring-tones that announce either one or both of the words that comprise the title of the piece, “Just Looking”, in an array of rhythmic and tonal variations that complement each other. As people receive the mass text, all the different ring-tones would sound off, roughly at the same time, creating a layered sound signature that claims the space as we leave: like audio graffiti (Just-J-L-Look-Just-Loo-Looking).
The process of browsing through clothes creates a mess. Participants will be encouraged to try on outfits and take pictures of each other with their (cell-phone) cameras, and upload their images to the project website. This will be like a do-it-yourself high-fashion model photo-shoot as well. And everyone knows that after you try on clothes, that they have to be folded again and put back. Not only will this interrupt their ability to serve their high-class clientele, thus, interrupting their business and creating a chaotic rush of non-productivity, but it would also discourage people from coming in to the store, on the basis of how crowded it is.
How will people know when to leave each location? Upon the scheduled amount of time at the designated place of business, I will send another mass text, indicating to leave, and which location would be next. As people receive the text, all the different ring-tones would sound off, roughly at the same time, creating a sound signature that claims the space as we leave: like audio graffiti (Just-J-L-Look-Just-Loo-Looking).
How will this project be documented? As mentioned above, Participants will be encouraged to try on outfits and photograph each other with their (cell-phone) cameras, and then upload their images to the project website. People can take sexy shots, funny shots, subversive shots, etc… This experience will be like a fun day of shooting, while interrupting the high strata of consumerism. This project can be thought of in the same vein as the Critical Mass events for bikers.
